Ingredients

Scale
  • 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup light brown sugar packed
  • 1 large egg at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups patriotic M&M's
  • 3 tablespoons sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Line a couple of cookie sheets with a Silpat mat or parchment paper.
  3. In a bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt using a whisk.
  4. Set the dry ingredient mixture aside.
  5. In a separate bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar and light brown sugar for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  6. Add the large egg and pure vanilla extract to the creamed butter and sugar mixture.
  7. Beat again for 1 minute until well combined.
  8. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients.
  9. Mix at slow speed until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  10. Gently fold in the patriotic M&M's.
  11. Using a medium cookie scoop (1.5 tablespoons size), scoop the cookie dough onto the prepared cookie sheets.
  12. Bake for 12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly browned and the centers are still soft.
  13. Remove the cookies from the oven.
  14. Allow the cookies to cool on the cookie sheets for 5 minutes.
  15. Transfer the cooled cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Ensure butter and egg are at room temperature for the best texture.
Do not overmix the dough after adding flour to keep cookies tender.
Slightly underbake for chewier cookies; they will continue to set as they cool.
Use a cookie scoop for uniform cookies that bake evenly.
