A classic, easy-to-make sugar cookie that holds its shape beautifully, perfect for holiday decorating.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg, (large)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, (measured correctly)
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder, (use aluminum free)
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 °F (175°C).
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Set the dry mixture aside.
  5. In a large bowl, using a stand mixer or handheld mixer, beat the softened unsalted butter until creamy.
  6. Add the granulated sugar to the butter.
  7. Beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  8. Add the large egg to the butter mixture.
  9. Add the vanilla extract to the butter mixture.
  10. Beat until the egg and vanilla are just combined.
  11. Gradually add the reserved flour mixture to the wet ingredients in three parts.
  12. Mix on low speed until the flour is fully incorporated after each addition.
  13. Do not overmix the dough.
  14. Divide the dough into two equal parts.
  15. On a lightly floured surface, roll one part of the dough to ¼-inch thickness.
  16. Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes from the rolled dough.
  17. Carefully transfer the cut-out cookies to the prepared baking sheet.
  18. Bake for 10 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden.
  19. Remove the baking sheet from the oven.
  20. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes.
  21. Transfer the partially cooled cookies to a wire rack.
  22. Allow the cookies to cool completely before decorating with icing.

Notes

Ensure your butter is truly softened, not melted, for the best cookie texture.
Measure flour correctly by spooning it into the measuring cup and leveling it off.
Do not overmix the dough once flour is added, as this can make cookies tough.
Bake until edges are just golden; cookies will firm up more as they cool.
